Blood Bag Temperature Monitoring: The Hemo Temp II Indicator from KAGER

In medical technology, pharmaceutical logistics and hospital management, reliable temperature monitoring of blood bags is essential to ensure the safety and usability of blood products.

Even minor deviations from the required storage temperature can compromise the quality of blood components.

With the Hemo Temp II indicator, KAGER provides a simple and reliable solution for thermal validation of blood bags during transport and storage.

Reliable temperature indicator for blood transport

The self-adhesive Hemo Temp II measuring strip, part of the KAGER Medical Line (KML), allows quick visual monitoring of the core temperature of blood bags.

The four-level temperature scale clearly indicates whether the temperature remains within the safe range:

  • 1–3 °C
  • 4–6 °C
  • 7–9 °C

This makes it easy to verify whether the critical temperature threshold of 10 °C has been exceeded during storage or transport.

The indicator is applied directly to the blood bag before shipment and monitors the temperature during the entire logistics process.

Clover symbol signals temperature threshold breach

To activate the indicator, KAGER provides a compact incubator device capable of heating up to twelve labels simultaneously to 42 °C within 60 seconds.

This process activates a thermochromic liquid crystal inside the indicator and reveals a blue clover symbol on the display scale.

This symbol confirms that the indicator is ready for use.

A key feature:

  • The temperature display is reversible
  • The clover symbol is irreversible

If the clover remains blue, the temperature limit has not been exceeded.

If the symbol turns grey or disappears, the blood bag temperature has exceeded 10 °C, meaning the blood product must be discarded for safety reasons.

Supporting quality assurance in blood logistics

The Hemo Temp II temperature indicator helps organizations involved in:

  • blood donation services
  • blood processing centers
  • hospitals
  • pharmaceutical logistics

to maintain blood product quality assurance and ensure cold chain validation.

When unused blood bags are returned, the indicator provides immediate verification that the cold chain has remained intact.

KAGER Medical Line: solutions for temperature monitoring

The KAGER Medical Line (KML) includes a wide range of products for:

  • temperature monitoring
  • threshold indicators
  • pharmaceutical logistics
  • supply chain control
  • packaging validation

All solutions are presented in the latest KML catalogue, a 50-page product overview available as a free PDF download from the KAGER website.

Product- and process-related thermal indicators by KAGER

Self-adhesive temperature indicators for reliable monitoring and documentation

Reliable temperature monitoring is a key factor in industrial quality assurance and process safety. KAGER offers a comprehensive range of self-adhesive temperature indicator strips and films with irreversible visual display – enabling clear, tamper-proof monitoring without electronics.

Two product groups are currently in particularly high demand: Tempstrip and Thermoscale. While both serve temperature monitoring purposes, they differ significantly in functionality and application focus.

🔹 Tempstrip – precise temperature monitoring at defined points

Tempstrip indicators cover a temperature range from 29 °C to 260 °C and are available as flexible strips or measurement dots. Typical applications include:

  • Manufacturing and assembly
  • Quality control and testing
  • Product development
  • Logistics and transport monitoring

They are available with 5-, 6-, 8- or 10-level scales and provide an irreversible color change, ensuring permanent documentation of exceeded temperature thresholds.

Key benefits:

  • Accuracy up to 100 °C: ±1 °C, above ±1 %
  • Easy handling, no power supply required
  • Tamper-proof visual documentation
  • Custom designs available on request
  • Supplied as strips, dots, or roll goods

🔹 Thermoscale – visualizing temperature distribution across surfaces

Thermoscale multilayer films are designed for process-related temperature profiling in a range from 150 °C to 210 °C. They are ideal for applications such as:

  • Process and simulation chambers
  • Drying ovens and machine housings
  • Pressure rollers and functional surfaces
  • Lamination, photovoltaic and bonding processes

🔬 How it works: Microcapsule color technology

Thermoscale films contain a microcapsule layer that reacts to heat by creating a permanent color gradient, ranging from light blue to deep red. Color intensity reflects both temperature level and exposure time.

Advantages:

  • Clear visualization of heat distribution
  • No measuring devices or complex setups required
  • Extremely thin – suitable for curved surfaces
  • Available as 5 m rolls or single sheets (270 × 200 mm)

🔹 One portfolio – extreme temperature coverage

Tempstrip and Thermoscale are part of KAGER’s extensive range of reversible and irreversible temperature indicators, including additional strips, films, temperature paints and specialty crayons.

➡️ In total, KAGER solutions cover temperatures from –17 °C up to +1,270 °C.

Temperature monitor in occupational safety

In addition to product solutions in the high-temperature range, the trading and consulting company Kager also offers temperature monitors for occupational safety. These are self-adhesive temperature indicators that reversibly indicate when the temperature of a surface exceeds +50°C. These temperature monitors have the appropriate name “Hot Hand”. If you want to be even more precise, you can choose the reversible temperature indicator “Go/No Go”, which reversibly shows at +43°C when this temperature has been reached. For users who prefer a traffic light system, the “Large Traffic Light” temperature monitor offers the right solution. These indicators show green, if the temperature is below +50°C, if the temperature increases between +50°C and +70°C, the area turns yellow. At a temperature above +70°C, red is displayed. The Hot Hand indicator has a diameter of 47 mm. The Go/No Go indicator measures 24 mm in diameter. The Large Traffic Light indicator has the size 48 x 52 mm.
